Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT)

At the Good Life Collaborative, we offer the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) for health and social care staff in the North East and North Cumbria. This training, named after Oliver McGowan, helps staff better understand the needs of autistic people and those with a learning disability. It aims to improve the quality of care by increasing awareness and knowledge among health and care staff.

Oliver McGowan was a young man who was autistic and had a mild learning disability. His death highlighted the urgent need for better training among health and social care professionals. Despite clear communication about his needs, Oliver received inappropriate treatment that led to his tragic death. His story has become a powerful catalyst for change, inspiring the development of this mandatory training to ensure that other families do not have to endure similar tragedies.

We deliver Tier 1 and Tier 2 training, both of which are co-delivered by experts with lived experience who are autistic, have a learning disability, or both.

Tier 1 is an online session lasting one hour, designed to give a general awareness of autism and learning disabilities. It’s ideal for staff who may not work directly with people who are autistic and/or have a learning disability, but need to be aware of their needs. For those in more public or patient-facing roles, we recommend Tier 2 training, which offers more in-depth information. Both levels include an e-learning component that participants must complete before attending either Tier 1 or Tier 2 training.

Our Tier 1 training is free and available to staff working at CQC-registered organisations within North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System.

Our Tier 2 training is a 1-day training course, delivered in-person by our training trios made up of a facilitator, an expert with a learning disability and an autistic expert.

We have a small number of subsidised Tier 2 training places available for NHS organisations. If you are interested in the subsidised places, please contact kirsty.greenwell@nhs.net.

It’s an important step towards ensuring that all health and care staff are equipped to provide compassionate and informed care. To book training, contact us at ommt@goodlifecollaborative.org. Together, we can make a difference in the quality of care provided to autistic people and people with a learning disability.
